NICTA officially launched the “Girls in ICT Day” on the 26th of April 2012.
Girls in ICT Day initiative is a global effort by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to encourage girls and young women to consider studies and careers in information and communication technologies (ICT). It takes place every year on the fourth Thursday of April and since 2011, over 240,000 girls and young women have taken part in 7,200 Girls in ICT Day celebrations in 160+ countries worldwide.
PNG, through NICTA as a member of the ITU, has official launched this day, which will become an annual event. This in line with International Telecommunication Union objective to grow the number of women/girls that are making a career in the ICT world and in keeping with the national objective to empower women in PNG, NICTA will launch in 2013 – the NICTA Girls in ICT Scholarship programme. Through this programme NICTA will support the education of girls in PNG, in an ICT related field of study.
