Type Approval is the requirement for ICT Equipment to comply with specific technical standards and specification. Such equipment must be registered with the NICTA before it can be used, sold or distributed in PNG.
NICTA is empowered by the NICT Act, 2009 and NICT Spectrum Regulation 2012 to administer and enforce the framework for approval of ICT equipment offered for sale or intended for connection to ICT networks in Papua New Guinea.
Type approval and/or Equipment certification provides assurance that in terms of design and operation, the ICT equipment will meet the technical requirements and will enable the equipment and ICT networks to coexist within acceptable limits. These limits are considered in conjunction with the efficient spectrum use.
Pursuant to sections 24 and 30 of the NICT Radio Spectrum Regulation, 2012, NICTA staff shall determine technical standard that set minimum requirements and performance standards based on international applicable standards to be met by ICT equipment intended for sale or use in PNG.
The technical standards and specifications verification is to ensure the safety of users and the Public Communication network. From this perspective, NICTA endeavour through the adoption of the Type Approval Regime to reach the highest levels of Typed Approval on various types of ICT equipments.
