Today, 17th May 2022 marks World Telecommunication and Information Society (WTIS) Day 2022, with the theme “Digital Technologies for older persons and healthy ageing”.
This year’s theme raises awareness of the important role of Information and Communication technologies (ICTs) in supporting people to stay healthy, connected and independent – physically, emotionally and financially. Supporting a life of healthy ageing is also critical for the sustainability of economic and health systems.
In line with the aspirations of this International Day, the ICT sector in Papua New Guinea continues to push for digital transformation and ICT development through policies and regulation to encourage investments, cooperation and partnerships. In commemorating the WTIS Day 2022 “Digital Technologies for older persons and healthy ageing”, is the theme throughout the year with national and regional initiatives to accelerate digital technologies.
The ever-changing ICT is exposing us to the vast promise and peril of new technologies. While the digital era promises many benefits, we also face many challenges such as growing digital divides and cyber threats.
Thus, the ICT sector in Papua New Guinea is therefore committed to improving and extending ICT services within the country. At the same time, we must take action to prevent and reduce the dangers of information technology.
On World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, let us continue to work together to ensure that ICT services are widely available, affordable and safe for all our people.
Happy World Telecommunication & Information Society Day!
